The Padma multi-purpose bridge in Bangladesh is located about 40km southwest of the capital Dhaka, across the Padma River (the Ganges), and a straight line distance of about 150km from the mouth of the Indian Ocean. After completion, it will become the main traffic artery connecting Mawa and Janjira. The project is contracted by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group.

The project includes the construction of the main bridge of the bridge, highway approach bridges, and some railway approach bridges. The total length of the project is about 7.7 kilometers.
It mainly includes the main bridge with a total length of 6,150 meters across the Padma River and the double-layer steel truss concrete composite beam main bridge and the approach bridge with a total length of 3679 meters on both sides.
The project was designed by the American AECOM company. Many new technologies were used in the design and construction of the bridge.

These technologies are the first applications in the world and have high requirements for safety, environmental protection, and occupational health by international standards.
Since the start of the construction of the project, it has solved the employment problem of surplus labor in the surrounding area to a large extent and promoted the local economic development.
After the completion of the project, Bangladesh’s north-south highways and railways will be connected and a new transportation artery will be formed, which is conducive to the transmission of north-south power and the development and utilization of tourism resources.
Furthermore, it will end the history of the local people relying on ferry transportation for thousands of years with a dramatic improvement in the transportation efficiency of the north-south flow of people and logistics. According to preliminary estimates, it will bring about a 1.2% growth in Bangladesh’s GDP every year.

বাংলাদেশের পদ্মা বহুমুখী সেতুটি রাজধানী ঢাকার প্রায় ৪০ কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিমে পদ্মা নদী (গঙ্গা) জুড়ে ভারত মহাসাগর থেকে সরল রেখায় ১৫০ কিলোমিটার দূরত্বে অবস্থিত। নির্মাণকাজের সমাপ্তির পর এই সেতুটি মাওয়া ও জাজিরা সংযোগকারী প্রধান যানচলাচলের মহাসড়কে পরিণত হবে। চীনের বিখ্যাত চায়না রেলওয়ে মেজর ব্রিজ ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং গ্রুপ এ প্রকল্পটি বাস্তবায়নে চুক্তিবদ্ধ।
সেতুটির দৈর্ঘ্য
প্রকল্পটিতে সেতুটির মূল সেতু, মহাসড়ক নিকটস্থ সেতুসমূহ এবং রেলপথের সাথে সংযুক্ত কয়েকটি সেতুর নির্মাণকাজ অন্তর্ভুক্ত। এ প্রকল্পের মোট দৈর্ঘ্য প্রায় ৭.৭ কিলোমিটার।
এটিতে মূলত অন্তর্ভুক্ত রয়েছে: পদ্মা নদী জুড়ে মোট ৬,১৫০ মিটার দৈর্ঘ্যের মূল সেতু এবং দুই স্তর বিশিষ্ট ষ্টিল ও কংক্রিট নির্মিত ট্রাস ও বিমের মূল সেতু ও উভয় পাশে ৩৬৭৯ মিটার মোট দৈর্ঘ্যের সংযোগ সেতু।
প্রকল্পটির নকশা তৈরি করেছে আমেরিকার এইসিওএম কোম্পানি। সেতুটির নকশা ও নির্মাণ কাজে অনেকগুলো নতুন প্রযুক্তি ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।
এই প্রযুক্তিগুলো বিশ্বের প্রথম এমন এপ্লিকেশনস যাদের রয়েছে আন্তর্জাতিক মানসম্মত প্রয়োজনীয় উচ্চপর্যায়ের নিরাপত্তা, পরিবেশ এবং পেশাগত স্বাস্থ্য সুরক্ষা ব্যবস্থা।
প্রকল্পটির নির্মাণকাজ শুরু হওয়ার পর থেকেই এটি আশপাশের অঞ্চলে উদ্বৃত্ত শ্রমের কর্মসংস্থানের সমস্যাটি অনেকাংশে সমাধান করেছে এবং স্থানীয় অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়নের অগ্রগতি সাধন করেছে।
প্রকল্পটি শেষ হওয়ার পরে, বাংলাদেশের উত্তর-দক্ষিণাঞ্চলের মহাসড়ক এবং রেলপথগুলো সংযুক্ত হবে।
ফলে, একটি নতুন পরিবহন রুট তৈরি হবে, যা উত্তর-দক্ষিণ অঞ্চলে বিদ্যুতের সঞ্চালন এবং পর্যটন সম্পদের বিকাশ ও ব্যবহারে সহায়ক হবে।
অধিকন্তু, এটি উত্তর-দক্ষিণে মানুষ এবং মালপত্র পরিবহনের দক্ষতার নাটকীয় উন্নতি সাধনের মাধ্যমে স্থানীয় লোকজনের হাজার হাজার বছর ধরে ফেরি পরিবহনের উপর নির্ভরতার ইতিহাসের ইতি টানবে।
প্রাথমিক আনুমানিক হিসেব অনুসারে, এই সেতুটি প্রতি বছর বাংলাদেশের জিডিপিতে প্রায় ১.২% প্রবৃদ্ধি নিয়ে আসবে।
